This painting has two levels: one being a scene around the Cross with John the disciple, Mary the mother of Jesus, a soldier, and Mary Magdalene (left to right) standing at the foot of it. The other is of Christ’s head (centre), the rough wood of the bar of the Cross forming the crown of thorns, and his hands with their holes (on either side), made by the five uprights of the figures on the ground.
